How can you vote for this racist pig?

Love this headline on Yahoo today: Clinton hints at shared ticket

Oh give me a fucking break.

On Hillary and Politics

My wife reads my blog. So last night she asks, "You really don't like Clinton do you?"

See here's the thing. As many have pointed out, the actual politics of Obama and Clinton are so similar many a political junkies can't tell the pair apart. But when Clinton went on the Negative Offensive, it just turned me off to politics-as-usual. When it all started, I would have been more than happy to vote for either. No longer.

On Texas, while I think it's bullshit that Clinton wants to change the rules on the fly, the rules are stupid. The candidate with the most votes should get more delegates, period. Having these goofy caucus rules renders the whole political system screwed up.

By some accounts, it's going to get ugly for the next 7 weeks. Who knows if that transpires.

In the end it looks like Hillary did well last night so that's moderately ok for her but bad for the Democrats in general. A prolonged 7 week fight does nothing for either because this will be mud-slinging time. And in the end, Obama is still going to lead in delegates, superdelegates, popular vote, and money raised. The math of Hillary winning is pretty ominous if you're a realist. But last night translates into more "it's 3:00 am do you know where your president is" television ads.

So to answer my wife's question, no, I no longer like Clinton. With the negative stuff, the questionable spin game, the crying card, and going with the gender argument, it all adds up to a bad candidate in November. The Republicans and McCain will eat her up this fall, which I don't think is what we need for the country.

There, I've lightly laid it out. Now I can go back to Hogging comments and the like to keep it simple. Again, apologies for taking this blog down the politics road but I feel compelled to care this week.

The Other White Meat

Note: In keeping with yesterday's theme I have (at least) 2 different posts today. Here is my bike post on the day. Maybe more to come depending on my random thoughts as I have them.

Check me out, I have a new Blackberry. They got me one of these newfangled GSM devices which looks much more sleek and space-aged than the last prehistoric model. The reason is because they want me to be able to answer email in Taiwan. The reason is not to keep me current with technology. Those 2 sentences embody another reason why I'm looking to switch groups at work.

FatCat

"Dude, I think you're nuts. But no wonder it hurt since you're crapping your brains out."

I guess this could be put in the bike post but it works either way. Figure you're more likely to read this one given the choice. But yeah, I hurt all over this weekend, legs, butt, even my lips were chapped most of the weekend. But it's all good because Forest Gump told me life is like a bowl of mashed potatoes waiting to be defiled at a party.

Let me fall further into the political abyss today. This is getting unhealthy I know. But here are 5 reasons why Clinton is the wrong candidate:

  1. Sue Texas
  2. Sue Florida
  3. Sue Michigan
  4. Cold calling people and tell them what Obama's middle name is
  5. Leak photo with Obama wearing a "Muslim hat"

Clinton is a vile piece of shit scumbag politician. The sad thing is that tactics 4 and 5 are working, as Obama's numbers in Texas and 0hio have tailed off a bit. Clinton still cannot win the nomination outright and will need to resort to illegal deals or the courts to win. But we know that's possible in this country. Again, sorry if you're a Clinton supporter but I cannot stand this business-as-usual politics and the fact the sheep of our nation buy it.

Another item that our system is broken is that in Ohio I've read McCain supporters are mobilizing to vote for Clinton because they feel she's the weaker opponent. The website votefortheworst.com is an added entertainment value to American Idol. The fact it translates to the selection of our president is downright sad.

Terren

"I'm down with the 7th generation stuff in principle but unfortunately the products are crap. I would revolt if Cher started buying that for toilet paper."

It's not so bad if you wipe gently. Maybe my ass is tough from all the bike riding. I've decided that for the rest of the week I'm going to wipe my ass with Clinton's head. This is getting really unhealthy, I know. I'll try to stop.

Monika Lewinsky fucked your husband!

OK really I'll stop.

Clinton is Bush?

A good comment here...

She has run her campaign the way he ran his war: on the fly, propelled by arrogance, incompetently, inconsistently and surrounded by yes men and women. You want to re-elect a president as inept and cocooned as the current one?

Seriously, the similarities are surely there. At this point, with the way she's running this campaign, I cannot vote for a Clinton in this election. She has become yet another vile representation of the back-door dealing, mud-slinging, arrogant politician. Even if it turns out that Obama is an empty suit at least he's honest, and by all indications he will listen to the people surrounding him. Hopefully the Obama Madness continues and he continues to pile on the once great Clinton Machine and by March 11th (or so) Hillary bows out with some modicum of grace and dignity.

Super Dooper Thursday

Comments today...

Helmet

"Fond memories of hearing Pearl Jam and the Chilli Peppers blaring through the halls of Davidson A all those years ago, Norm. Good times indeed."

Wow, long time no see, Jeff. Just when you think nobody reads your blog a character from 15 years ago pops up and says hello. I assume you found the link through the Grease Truck? Do you post there?

My musical tastes have diversified since then, I assure you. Having said that I'm still not entirely sold on TV on the Radio.

George

"Norm, I enjoy the random sometimes scattered thoughts...keep them coming dude! Sounds like you are training pretty intense too...good on ya mate. Football: I could not believe how Dallas blew it. They just didn't show up - mentally. I've been a Cowboy fan for the past 33 almost 34 years, and that was as disappointing as I can remember. Big Tom's hat must have fallen off some grand mantel. Iv'e also been a Colt fan since 1975...and could not believe what I was seeing! My two favorite teams losing critical games. Somewhere in time...Johnny U was groaning! Beer: I had some Hoegaarden on Sunday watching the games. I'm not a big beer drinker, but I like this one - light, and crisp. I do enjoy a good weiss as well now and then. Politics: This could take up the rest of blogging space until the end of time. But I will just say that I'm not a big fan of Clinton or Obama, nor anyone on the left for that matter. At the moment, I'm leaning towards McCain. I need a candidate who understands what Sovereignty is, and will protect it. A candidate who can direct the U.S. towards a stable, and strong economy - not strictly dependent on trade and service sectors to keep us afloat. Fios: I hear it is a great service, and it is a good alternative to the monopolizing bastards of comcast. As soon as it become available here...I'm in. More football: Since both my teams are out, I will now root for the elder and the wise, Favre. Us old guys have to stick together! NJ Transit: I hear there may be some issues with the Amtrak strike? As if getting to the City wasn't a pain in the ass enough...I sympathize with you brother. Hopefully, it doesn't impede on you too much. Big words: Hmmm, I can undeniably fathom how expressing oneself with such eloquent, sometimes complex words may reveal a certain...shall we say egocentric mood. Lest we say, fore it is not to overshadow, nor bolster within...but rather edify - if only for ourselves! LOL. When all else fails, the Scot's say fuck all! Hope all is well with you and Nat and Julia. Take care for now my blogging friend."

Hey George, good to hear from you. Training hard, for sure. On football, I'm torn right now. Having grown up a Cowboys fan I'm supposed to hate the Giants but suddenly I'm sick of Boston. At the same time, it would be classic to see a team go 19-0. Who isn't sick of the 1972 Dolphins?

On politics I think it's time to stop with the balls first approach to govermnent. Thankfully I think all those candidates are gone. Looks like we have Obama/Clinton versus McCain/Romney. Of them I'm least thrilled with Romney but the reality is that I know nothing about him. I'm not a left vs. right guy and I think anyone who takes that stand isn't helping the process. What I look for is someone who listens to reason, regardless of their current stance. To me both Obama and McCain do, which is good. I think Clinton would be fantastic for the country but right now she's turning into a political scumbag. Romney is cardboard so it's hard to like him. A lot of people see McCain as equivalent to Bush, and the fact that the White House quietly endorses McCain is a bit of a red flag. So maybe I'm errant in that assessment.

I envision Clinton versus McCain election with Clinton so polarizing the country that McCain walks in a landslide. I think Clinton will win the nomination because it will be a close call and their machine will sue and cheat its way to the nomination.

Another possibility is that Edwards backs Obama on Friday and Clinton is left fighting to counter that move on Monday among all the post-Super Bowl media coverage. In that scenario Obama has a big advantage on Super Duper Tuesday. I have to imagine the Clinton machine is doing everything they can to stall Edwards from doing that, though most seem to think Edwards has been bucking for the VP or Attorney General spot the whole time and Obama's side is likely the easier path to that. I think Obama has a legit chance against McCain.

Ah politics. I'm about sick of it already but I can't help but be interested in this coming Tuesday's primary mess. Should be fun.

Ranting Lunatic Post Warning

A few things to babble about today but I don't feel like typing the whole way on the train so not sure how much I'll get through. I'm going to start with Coach G again since biking is more important than the other stuff.

ChrisG

"Cool. I assumed a 5 minute rest interval would be a good choice. Since you're time-limited, how long do you warm up before the work begins? I find I can't get much accomplished on the trainer w/o at least a 10 minute warmup, and I usually do 20, particularly for high-rpm, intense stuff."

Warm up has been a battle over the years but last year I finally, finally, finally understood the value of it. I'm sure you know that already. But for the other guys out there - Steve, Jake, Walter - who may race this year let me say that warming up before a race was 1 of the 3 main reasons I made such big progress towards the end of the season. If everyone in the field warmed up properly I believe there's no way I come in top 10 at Ringwood. That's how important I think it is and most of the guys I see out there don't warm up enough.

To answer your question, it depends. On the 3x20 days I warm up 15 minutes. On the tempo days it's only 10, but the first 10-30 minutes of those tempo rides are on the lower end of tempo so it's sort of an integrated warm up where I slowly press up based on how I feel. On high end days it's 20 minutes and even that doesn't seem like enough as usually the first few intervals are sometimes really tough. But it's hard to set aside 45 minutes to really warm up properly on those beastly days.

I might say that being able to jump into the 20 minute block after 15 minutes of warm up might suggest I'm not going right up at threshold. But I will also tend to start at a bit of a lower cadence at the start, say 85-87 and try and drift up to 90/91. I know now from experience that "toughing it out" and warming up at full speed is a sure way to toast your legs and crush motivation.

On to other things. Damn, it turns out I have too much to talk about today and not enough time. There are at least 2 more things I wanted to get in but may not have the thumb-cycles to bang it out. So instead I'll go with this one.

I have a saddle sore the size of Saturn right now. I woke up this morning with rings and moons and NASA satellites around my butt, it's that bad. This must be the first one in about 6 months so that's good. Incidentally, this may correspond with my getting back on the trainer regularly. Or it may have to do with wearing the diaper-shorts on the trainer Tuesday. If you've ever had diaper shorts you know what I mean. They're not really called anything different they just have a chamois that could buffer your head against the windshield in a high-speed car accident. Thick, soft, and not ergonomically sensical at all. I think I may opt out of my diaper shorts on the trainer for a while and see if things get better.

In reading the environment book I came across some good stuff yesterday. You may have heard the assessment that we as a world are losing 40,000 species a year, or that in 50 years we will have wiped out 50% of all currently existing species. It's an interesting number, this 40,000, especially when you look at the data to support it. The man who made this claim does have field experience and is a trained scientist, like Batman. I'm going to now present some of his data.

On average this is how many extinction events he observes every year:

1

The most extinction events ever witnessed by this man in one year:

4

Extrapolating from this, here is how many we should assume:

40,000

Solid science. Actual data and models suggest that in the next 50 years we will lose .7% of all existing species. This is a number much higher than what "should" be dying out. But it's significantly lower than Greenpeace, WWI, or the Sierra Club would have you believe.

The point here is that man does infringe upon nature and that it is a problem that needs to be addressed. But it is not a "holocaust" as some institutions claim.

The more I read this book and the more I follow the election process the more I see govermnent and politics as a white elephant of a burden to society. People wonder why this or that world event takes place and nobody cares. I'm starting to understand why. This is because so much of what you read and what you are told is bullshit. In the end it seems that almost everyone who gets 1 minute of Andy Warhol's fame becomes a politician. They cannot hold any sense of morals and somehow feel the need to lie and push an agenda. People seem to convince themselves this is done for the "common good" so that they can sleep at night. I see it in all walks of life, from the top of the country down to a personal level. I wonder if it is possible for man to exist and not lie in order to reach some personal aim that they have deemed more important than being honest.

This is funny in light of the fact so many people believe in god and feel that god is guiding their actions. If there is a god, and I have no idea if there is or not, how can this god entity be anything but disgusted at the collection of nearly 6 billion liars that this world has become? Or is this part of the process? Is this god reading my blog and thinking, "Well looks like human being #435,123,456,997,000,001 learned a lesson this week. But what's all this me-in-vain shit going on?"

Yes, this turned into a rant. My train broke down and now I'm in Secaucus waiting for another train to pick up a few thousand stranded passengers. So it goes.

We had layoffs yesterday further destabilizing the already unstable work environment. I think we lost roughly 2 out of every 7 people in the department. Not a morale booster but these things never are. I'm not going to say much more than that. I honestly had absolutely no idea if I was going to get called in or not. Job security is at an all-time low. Like the broken down train, so it goes.

I had a Brooklyn Chocolate Stout last night and it was good. In the 4/3 scheme I have now Wednesday or Thursday are OK for beer. Those days give enough time for recovery from Tuesday's morning ride without compromising Saturday morning's ride. It was 1 big beer though, and that was plenty. I figured I deserved it since I hit 185 yesterday. When we sat down for dinner Julia said out of nowhere, "Daddy...beer." Like Homer Simpson, don't mind if I do!

I made some homemade trail mix yesterday which was your standard nuts and raisins and chocolate chips but I cut it with Kashi O's cereal to bump up the carbs and the volume. The biggest downer about trail mix is that you can take 200 calories in a small handful and not even realize it until your bathroom scale says 245 a few months later. As the day wore on, however, I worried that it might be too good but...

Alas that wasn't the case as the scale said 184 today. Look out 181 here I come. I hope.

Scattered Monday

A lot of random thoughts on Monday so I doubt this will have any flow at all.

Change. I may have a potential change coming up soon. Good stuff. And no, it won't keep me off the bike. Right now that's all I'm going to say.

Football. I watched the end of both games yesterday and when it came down to it, both star QBs couldn't get it done. I grew up a Cowboys fan but don't care these days. But when they're on the TV in front of me, I'm drawn to root for them. Once again, the 4 best teams in football fail to make both championship games but on the NFC side of the ball you have a classic old-school football match-up. In New England I think you're going to see a slaughter. If I told you Friday that only 1 Manning would win this week...

Obama. Up until this point I've been an Obama lean. But with Clinton issue about Iraq and former president Bill calling Obama's view a "fairy tale" I think Obama really screwed the pooch on this one. The Obama camp retaliated and said it was a racist remark. What a joke. Perhaps Clinton's comment was bullshit, inaccurate, stupid. Who knows. But racist? Not remotely. Now when confronted with this Obama had every chance to take the high road and what did he do? Nothing. He let it linger. Basically they want every advantage they can get, so the candidate that we were led to believe wasn't going to play bullshit politics is doing exactly that. What's more, if Obama is elected are we going to have him playing the victim of racism every time some politician disagrees with him? This potentially does as much to polarize politics as anything all the other candidate do. Disappointing.

Fios. We had Fios installed yesterday, a process which took about 4 hours, 2 of which I was on the bike. We now have phone, cable, and internet through them and we should save something like $40 a month or so. It went about as smoothly as you could possibly expect. When I left for my ride he said I was going to take 6 hours. When I got back there was Peyton Manning choking away the game in crystal clarity and he was about done. The DVR receiver seems a bit flakey but I think that's the price of being in the post-beta rollout of this stuff.

The next few are bike. Skip ahead to beer if you want.

Bike. Saturday I had a really strong 2 hour ride of 36+ miles. When I was done my legs felt like they had done a race. Yesterday I did another 2 hours but without the same juice, just over 34 miles. When I was done I felt almost too good, but then when I walked down to the basement my legs were trashed. This morning I got up at 4:30 and banged out 3 sets of 20 minutes at threshold.

Yes, 4:30. My thinking is this. Well, I already explained my rationale for doing 4 days on, 3 off. So today and tomorrow the plan is to wake up 15 minutes earlier and stay on the bike 5-10 minutes longer at the end to make those Mon/Tue sessions close to 90 minutes. It makes those mornings a hair more hectic but it also allows me to "sleep in" until 6:00 an extra day during the week. So I lose 30 total minutes of sleep on those 2 days but I gain an hour of sleep on Friday.

So far, my 3 workouts have been really strong. Today's workout was better than last Monday's workout, which was the 4th day of a set. Today was day 3. But in those 3 days I've done 5.5 hours of quality work. The idea is to not waste much time and right now I'm not.

Beer. There is none. With the heavy bike load I find beer useless. When I'm tired and in need of rest and nutrition, beer simply doesn't taste good. The further in shape I get the less appealing it seems to me. I used to make Sunday evening my beer day. But that doesn't work anymore because it's smack dab in the middle of my block. You just can't get up at 4:30 if you have a few beers the night before. And I'm not talking about 12 beers. Just 3 wipes me out now.

Food. My daily goal is 8 total fruits and veggies. Ideally I want 4 and 4 but whatever. I also try to spread them out through the day as best I can. I find that if i reach the goal of 8, I simply don't eat as much of the higher calorie food. Basically if you're hungry and it's late afternoon, hey eat some carrots. If you're still hungry hit the almond butter.

Feedback. I've got at least 4 comments still to get on here, some from Steve, Jake, George, and Terren. Terren's needs a little more research but there was a lot of info that popped up on Google criticizing Freakonomics and the correlation between abortion and criminal statistics. But much of this also seemed to lead back to 1 source, though there were some mentions that the author of Freakonomics may have offered a mea culpa for that assertion. Still, those are all shit on the wall at this point and I certainly need to read more about it. The one thing that becomes obvious as I get older is that nothing is ever so simple.

Fin. That's all folks.

The Times Is Calling

As I told Walter yesterday I think the Times may be calling soon to ask me to write a piece for them. I base this on the fact that my prose lately is so riveting. As a non-biking factoid, did you know that the Exxon Valdez was only the 20th biggest oil spill ever? So with that, more bike rivets!!!

ChrisG

"I'm very familiar with Ross (you're not surprised, I assume) so I just wanted to hear if that was what you were doing. And it does make sense, certainly. You also state a key element that in order to make gains, you'll have to suck it up. That's for sure, no matter what plan you're on. I did a Ross-style 4 days myself this week, as I did nearly 2 hours each day on the mtb Monday and Tuesday, following 5 hours on the bike over the weekend. Boy, was I hungry last night. Being a "traditionalist" training-wise, Monday is usually a day off or a very easy active recovery day for me, but the weather has been too nice to pass up, and college teaching (on Monday) doesn't start until 1/28."

Good to hear someone is out enjoying the weather. Rain or shine, warm or cold, this cubicle monkey gets no benefit out of the January warmth. So nothing changes for me. By the weekend it looks like temps will drop back down to where road riding means cold toes but not cold enough to freeze things up on the trails. This is the winter. So it goes.

I'm not surprised you know Ross but I wouldn't have been surprised if you hadn't read him. He's definitely not traditional and a lot of people say it's the only new training philosophy in the last 30 years. Most of the books are really new ways to say the same things people have been saying for years. Ross takes a different perspective.

At the same time, at the end of the day he's also saying that you need to work hard to make gains. The one big difference is that he advocates working harder and resting more. Very few people suggest 3 days off a week. I think only Ross and David Morris do. Blocks blocks blocks.

So yesterday I felt more rested but by early afternoon I was dead tired and by night I was shot. Expected for sure. So far today I feel pretty good but we'll see how it goes. I'm still assessing whether or not to ride Friday and right now I'm leaning against it. You need to suck it up sometimes but I don't think it makes sense to be going through the motions at 5:05 am on a Tuesday morning. I probably should take Friday off for the sake of experimentation. Will my Tuesday session be lackluster whether or not I ride Friday? Only 1 way to find out.

Steve

"almost one year ago: http://www.mtbnj.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1707 i picked 3 of your final 4 as running mates for the '08 ticket Obama/Lieberman McCain/Giuliani"

Things remain interesting on the Dems side with Hillary's win in NH. Technically she lost, oddly, since they split the delegates 9-9 and for whatever reason Obama gets more "super delegates" than she does, 4-3. But Clinton won popular vote and keeps it an interesting race nonetheless. For me, all I care about is seeing an interesting game. I can say at this stage of my life that I just don't care who wins the election. I'll vote, but it won't bother me much who wins unless it's some second coming of Hitler candidate.

I'm happy to see Giuliani getting plowed so far because quite frankly I think he's a fucking Fascists. The crime statistics in NYC more or less follow that national trends of lessened violent crime which just so happens to coincide with the removal of lead from gas and paint. Yet somehow he gets credited with this. If 9-11 had never happened, he would not have the legacy he does. His approval rating in NYC was not so hot before.

But anyway, McCain with a big win makes it yet more interesting. Boy, things are WFO right now on both sides of the political coin. It's almost like UFC. Almost.

Bike Politics

I'm starting to have the trainer blues already. I don't have the fire I had last year in the offseason which is understandable since I hit a lot of my weight goals and I didn't put on any weight over the holidays. In fact, I took off weight over Christmas, getting back 3 of the 5 pounds I put on over fall vacation and Thanksgiving. So I'm hovering in at 187 and motivated, but not motivated enough to embrace 3 more months of trainer pain.

Part of my problem is what I watch, which is right now ESPN's SportsCenter. I'm mildly interested in sports, and right now you have College Football, the NFL playoffs, and Roger Clemens. But you also have highlights of 94 dunks every morning which is tedious at best, mind-numbing at worst. I tried to watch Shrek 2 last week but that failed miserably. I need to reroute the stereo so I can play music and not have it too loud in the bedroom upstairs or something. Or something. Or...

I think I'm coming up on needing to drop to 4 days a week already. The plan was a long, slow, and steady offseason build but I find that I push pretty hard on weekends then hit Monday tired. That's fine, but Monday and Tuesday mark the 4th and 5th consecutive days in a row for the week and I don't have a lot of juice left, like this morning. It was all I could do to stay on for an hour plus. I'd probably be more productive to have 2 killer pre-work sessions than 3 average-to-decent pre-work sessions. Maybe just get up at 4:30 and sit in for an extra 15 minutes before and maybe 10 after to bump that total up to 90 minutes of hammering, then add in the weekends at 4-5 total hours.

My weekends are already pressing my limits which is good, but like I said leaves me a bit spent for the week. By tonight I'll be a walking zombie of little use to the family. But then today's session wasn't so hard so maybe I'll be so-so. I could tell I was fading yesterday because all I wanted to read was my simple book (Evanovich book #3 in the Plum series) instead of my Environment book.

I dislike national politics but I can't help but be mesmerized by Obama's potential explosion to the forefront of the ticket tonight when the NH primary goes down. This could be it for Clinton which a lot of people were writing about yesterday. It seems Edwards has jumped on the Obama side a hair and decided to stick the dagger in Clinton so she's on a bit of an island. It will be interesting to see if she falls off and if so, how fast she will throw in the towel. If the 2 championship games come down to Obama/Edwards and Guiliani/McCain it can't help but be a really interesting political Super Bowl. But Romney seems to be right there which is throwing things off. A Final Four as outlined above would be pretty progressive for this country, given that the religious vote put Bush back in office in 2004. Yeah, we're still missing a woman candidate but 2 months ago I would have bet my house that a black man would never win eiuther nomination. Now it seems clearly possible. Too bad Condoleeza Rice never threw her hat in since a black woman coming out of the Conservative camp would just be really juicy stuff.

Tuesday is as Tuesday does.
