You Never Know

I'm sure many of you are aware of the Taiwanese parliament and their pristine track record for peaceful accord when debating an issue. It's world famous. If you aren't familiar with it then this picture tells you all you need to know.

This is in the midst of a heated debate. On one hand, you have to admire the ferocity. On the other, it's an embarrassing portrait showing the world this is how you resolve your issues. Points for caring. But what you gain in passion you lose in composure.

My wife is Taiwanese, so she looks at these and shakes her head. She sent me this picture this morning with the comment, "How embarrassing." Ultimately she doesn't care, and gets as much of a kick out of it as I do. Still, there's a part of both of us that can't help but cringe when we see it, since it's her country of origin. Will China try to send a scud missile up my ass for referring to Taiwan as a country?

My father-in-law is heavily into politics. Every time I see one of these pictures I cringe because I think I might see him in the middle of the fray. While I don't really expect to ever have that happen, it's not entirely out of the question and both of us know it. He's not a politician so it would be curious for him to be in the parliament duking it out. But again, not entirely out of the question. And as much as I cringe at the thought for my wife's sake, I would find it immensely entertaining at the same time.

The key thing is that really, you never know.
